Soya Beans
How much do you know about Soya Beans? When Gabor asked me this about a year ago, I honestly answered him: ‘I know that they are having an awful affect on the planet.’ His response was fascinating.
Let’s start with the basics. Soya Beans are among the best sources of plant-based protein. The protein content of soya beans is 36-56% of the dry weight. This is huge as a huge part of leading a plant-based lifestyle is finding a healthy and substantial source of protein. Soya Beans are used to create Tofu which is an incredibly versatile food. Tofu has an almost chicken like texture and consistency and is great at absorbing flavours to create delicious plant based meals, filled with protein.
Unfortunately, soya beans have gotten a pretty bad reputation in recent years. This is due to the increasing number of plantations in the Amazon basin leading to mass deforestation.
Increasing meat consumption is the main driver behind soy’s continuing expansion. Around 80% of soy worldwide is used for animal feed, especially for poultry and pigs. - The Growth of Soy: Impacts and Solutions, 2014 WWF report.
We at Fully Free Ireland use Soya Beans to make our own, homemade, Tofu. We then use this to create our Vegan Cream Cheese base. The process is really quite simple. Once we have made of Vegan Cream Cheese base, we can then either leave it plain and original, or choose to add our favourite flavours; Paprika, Chives&Garlic and Capers&Jalepeños. We love to use our Vegan Cream Cheese as a spread at breakfast and have found it to be a great dip for vegan breadsticks, crackers or even cheeky lentil crisps!
